A Stand Up Guide for Public Speaking and Workshop with Steph Dalwin and Ammo Marfo

Steph Dalwin (she/her) is a Boston-based standup comedian. She draws inspiration from her upbringing in a Vietnamese and Jewish household and in everyday situations like shopping while plus size, trips to the grocery store, and her quest for the perfect chicken nugget. Steph regularly performs in the Boston area, and recently performed at the Far From Here Comedy Festival in Toronto.

After years of writing about comedy for The Interrobang, Splitsider, and her own website, Amma (she/her) decided to take to the stage – on the nudge of a dare set for her by her podcast co-hosts. Six years later, she’s appeared at Newport, RI’s Rogue Island Comedy Festival, NYC’s Black Women in Comedy Laff Fest and alongside comedians like Mia Jackson, Alingon Mitra, and Leighann Lord. Amma also released her first half hour special, “Enjoy Your Nachos,” which is available on YouTube.

Everyone has probably experienced stage fright at some point in their life. It is incredibly daunting to present to an audience, especially in a professional setting in which the stakes can be high. Yet key to conquering public speaking often lies in managing, rather than eliminating, anxiety. Bringing their combined experience in standup comedy, storytelling, and performance, Amma Marfo and Steph Dalwin will share tips and tricks they’ve learned along the way to make the stage more approachable. They will address questions like:

·         How do you get more comfortable onstage?
·         Do the nerves ever go away?
·         How can we make public speaking less scary?

Join them in the second hour for an interactive one-hour session to learn more public speaking lessons from standup comedy.

We’re all aware of the value and importance of goals. Having them is essential to success; achieving them is essential to happiness and fulfillment in life. Every decision we make is affected by our goals—whether they are explicitly known or not. But setting goals is not enough; it is necessary to achieve them. And that is why this information is so important. Goals are a strategy to improve something in your life, something which isn’t perfect yet. To achieve them it is important to know how to specify them correctly to ensure the greatest possibility of achievement, and to develop Action Plans that will serve as your road map to success.

Following are the topics that will be covered:
1. The importance of your emotional state and how to manage it
2. What motivation really is; how to get it and how to maintain it
3. How to specify your goals in statements that will ensure the maximum
probability of success
4. Moving Toward v. Moving Away From goals
5. The critical importance of your Action Plan
6. We will do a Goal Achievement Process from which you will learn the
goals that are explicitly right for you.
